Questions to Consider:

1. Based on what evidence will twinning the Port Mann Bridge and widening the freeway solve the congestion problem?

2. How does this project fit with the priorities in TransLink's Strategic Transportation Plan,
the GVRD Livable Region Strategic Plan, the GVRD Sustainable Region Initiative, the Vancouver City Transportation Plan and the Vancouver Climate Change Action Plan?

3. Will the additional traffic on an expanded freeway add to air quality problems and greenhouse gas

emissions? If air quality is reduced, have the resulting health costs been factored into the cost of the project?
4. What will be the impact of added freeway capacity on financial returns from bridge and transit infrastructure improvements
already committed or under construction?

5. What transportation demand and other alternative options, costs and benefits have been assessed and compared with the proposals to increase road supply?

6. Is there an expectation of widened arterial streets in adjacent municipalities to access the expanded freeway? If so, are the costs of these widenings included in the proposed budget?

7. How does this project meet the commitment to sustainability in the Vancouver 2010 transportation plan?
("We will reduce energy use, minimize local air pollution and congestion, limit
greenhouse gas emissions, and showcase new technologies while ensuring safe, reliable and efficient movement of people and goods during the Games.")

8. What kind of region will we create in the Fraser Valley?

9. What effect will this have on the Agriculture Land Reserve (ALR)?

Additional Ways to Act:

There are a number of things you can do about the proposed freeway expansion. Here are a few ideas (we're also   open to new and innovative
suggestions!):

  • The SPEC Action Centre - a mass emailing to:

Honorable Gordon Campbell: Premier of British Columbia

Minister Lawrence Cannon: Federal Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Communities

Minister David Emerson: Federal Minister for the Asia Pacific Gateway

Minister Kevin  Falcon: BC Minister for Transportation and Highways

Minister Chuck Strahl: Senior Federal Minister for BC,

  • Stay informed. This site is updated regularly with the latest news regarding freeway expansion. There are also other great resources out there.

  • Write letters to your local and regional papers expressing your support for the Livable Region Strategic Plan, and a stand against poorly-conceived highway expansion projects and their associated car dependent land developments.

  • Attend an LRC event. Check back for the next meeting.

  • Contact your MLA, and your MP to express your support for a livable region and your concern over the Minister of Transportation's intent to proceed with plans for major highway expansion without first considering more forward-thinking solutions (with a copy to the Minister of Transportation).

  • Use the published letters in our In the Media section as samples when writing to your MLA or MP. You can also base your letter on the LRC's 10 questions to the Minister.

  • The important thing is to let your voice be heard.

“The effect of a Sumas 2 plant in the Fraser Valley airshed, though significant, is relative. Of more importance is our own contribution of emissions from passenger vehicles and housing developments. With regard to housing, our interest in residential development contrasts with the negative reactions to industrial development. Similarly, the convenience of personal motorized transportation seems to outweigh the impacts vehicles have on air quality. In 2002, British Columbians purchased approximately 107,000 passenger cars and 87,500 light trucks. Over ten years, these vehicles will produce six times more health-related emissions than a single Sumas 2.”
