South of the Fraser 2011

Paul Hillsdon has put together his vision of a South of the Fraser transit vision for 2011. One of the reasons why I think it is so interesting is that he is a Grade 12 student in Surrey and his proposal is far smarter than anything coming out of the Ministry of Transportation or TransLink.

He takes into consideration where growth is expected to occur, and proposes various kinds of public transit that run through these high-growth areas. He proposes a combination of heavy rail, light rail and BRT. All-in-all a very thorough report.

(Warning, this is a large PDF file ~30MB)

You can also find it on Paul's blog.

UPDATE: Paul's server seems to be overwhelmed. You can also download his report here.

Thanks Andrew for the linkback. It's great to hear you liked the report! Just to warn people, it was mostly written last Spring, so some of the proposals may be a little dated or in need of upgrade. All in all though, I still stand by it.

Funny you should say it's better than TransLink's - that's what staff at the Surrey City Hall planning department said as well!

True, it's a very good document. I also checked Paul's website today and apparently it's overwhelmed. Definitely great to see a 17 yr old do great work!

I read Paul's report last spring when he first wrote it and was also impressed by it. One thing I actually think more people should do is what Paul is doing, which is offering proposals. People are quick to criticize, and Paul's report offers ideas (backed up with data).

The Livable Blog

Our goal as the Livable Region Coalition (LRC) is to provide a voice for those who believe that efficient and sustainable transportation is a cornerstone for the future of the Lower Mainland. We believe that through creating attractive transportation choices, encouraging urban density, and preserving green space and agricultural land, we can make our communities better places to live and grow.

We believe that the provincial government's strategy to pursue excessive development through the Gateway project is detrimental to the well-being of Greater Vancouver. The Gateway project's stated goals of reducing pollution and congestion will not materialize. Evidence for this comes from many sources. Instead, we advocate real solutions that will actually work and will be less expensive.
