Government of Canada Launches New Sustainable Communities Initiative

Communities across Canada will benefit from better energy efficiency and improved environmental impact, thanks to a new initiative launched today by the Government of Canada. The new $4.2 million, EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative will seek to improve community planning and develop healthy sustainable communities that are energy-efficient, economically viable and vibrant places to live.

A key part of sustainable communities is the transportation systems we use. TransLink is looking for feedback at bepartoftheplan.ca to ensure that Metro Vancouver maintains its livability for years to come. if you'd like your say, then I'd suggest going to the website or one of the discussion forums taking place now throughout Metro Vancouver

Being somewhat cynical from the Gateway and Canada Line experience, who is to say that TransLink really wants to hear from those of us with some knowledge of transportation issues, as opposed to Joe Sixpack? And at least over the next four years, it's going to be the Great Helmsmen -- Gordon Campbell and Kevin Falcon -- who call the shots. So this may merely amount to nothing more than a typical PR exercises to say to the public that they were consulted when the plans have already been made and the deals are already done.

The Livable Blog

Our goal as the Livable Region Coalition (LRC) is to provide a voice for those who believe that efficient and sustainable transportation is a cornerstone for the future of the Lower Mainland. We believe that through creating attractive transportation choices, encouraging urban density, and preserving green space and agricultural land, we can make our communities better places to live and grow.

We believe that the provincial government's strategy to pursue excessive development through the Gateway project is detrimental to the well-being of Greater Vancouver. The Gateway project's stated goals of reducing pollution and congestion will not materialize. Evidence for this comes from many sources. Instead, we advocate real solutions that will actually work and will be less expensive.
